The Sustainable Events Group (SEG) specialises in helping the public and private sector design, develop and implement sustainable event management systems to meet the requirements of the updated and completely revised standard BS 8901:2009. We work with event clients, organisers, venues and event suppliers of all types and sizes. Sustainable event management means engaging meaningfully with social, environmental and economic impacts of the events that you design, deliver or simply cause to happen.

Our mission is to inspire leadership and change for a sustainable world and to provide the best advice and support to ensure the UK events industry is leading the world on sustainability. SEG will continue to be instrumental in helping the event industry shape BS 8901 into a valuable tool.

We aim to ensure our clients gain maximum benefit from their efforts thereby contributing to their sustained success.

Prompted by 2012 but already shaping the present

It’s no secret that the creation of BS 8901 was prompted by the Olympic Games coming to London in 2012. Yet for every community, social, sporting or business event, the implications of using the standard reach far beyond a specific date in the calendar. At its heart, BS 8901 is a whole new way of doing business, building communities and managing enduring and meaningful legacies. No matter how hard the present circumstances might seem, it offers a completely new way of planning a practical sustainable future by realising direct benefits in the present.

BS 8901 prompts users to get beyond the rhetoric of sustainability and engage with the practical issues of the here and now. As an example, just look at the following passages,  taken from the Sustainability Guidelines of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG ).Click here to download the full document. As you can see, they are taking it very seriously...

'We seek to be compliant with the new British Standard for a Sustainable Event Management System: BS 8901 and have robust assurance processes in place to support this goal. These Guidelines form part of our management systems approach to achieving this.'

'These Guidelines have been developed primarily for our internal event organisers and those contracted or otherwise closely involved in delivering London 2012 corporate and public events: e.g. venue managers, suppliers, licensees, commercial partners and media organisations.'

'We expect the companies and organisations we work with to follow this process with us, to have in place a sustainability policy, to comply with all applicable legal requirements and at least be working towards implementation of BS 8901 in their own right'
